Experimental Evaluation of Tension and Shear Capacities of New Headed Cast-in Specialty Inserts in Cracked Concrete

Abstract Headed cast-in specialty inserts are often developed and employed for their improved constructability time-saving benefits over traditional post-installed anchors. Their acceptance criteria (AC 446) were established by The International Code Council Evaluation Service. However, previous research on the behavioral characteristics of headed is rare. This study investigates performance a newly insert anchor use as an earthquake-resistant fire protection systems suspended lightweight piping. Firstly, three cyclic tension tests with threaded rod conducted in accordance AC 446. These resulted all experimental subjects achieving target strength without defects. Subsequently, monotonic shear cracked concrete performed five times each to assess tensile capacities new anchor. results compared nominal determined design equation provided ACI 318 anchors, finding that latter adequately approximates breakout but underestimates pryout shear. Based measured failure surface angles, projected area cone corresponding relatively large head size proposed.
